Summary:
solartonic provided 2 different solarlume smart off-grid and hybrid solahubTM framework products for full autonomy and mains backup system options respectively. The hybrid product includes a security system, with remote access CCTV streaming video on an LTE cloud communications network, together with a local public Wi-Fi access point for mobile devices. The LED lights illuminate the main entry access road at Terminal 2 at Changi Airport in Singapore. solartonic’s smart control platform provides daily switching of LED lights in relation to variable dusk and dawn times throughout the year, together with power management of all connected CCTV, Wi-Fi and LTE network devices, which operate 24/7 without interruption.

Overview
Year over year, Changi Airport in Singapore has been rated the top airport in the world. Beyond its numerous top-quality amenities, safety and security are still top priorities. Like most airports, Changi spends a great deal in monitoring and inspecting its outdoor safety and security infrastructure, especially along access roadways and perimeter fencing and is seeking to upgrade its facilities, by adopting state-of-the-art framework technology. A substantial amount of monitoring is carried out by maintenance staff physically inspecting their lighting and security installations across the entire airport facility.
solartonic offers a smart off-grid energy and communications solahub™ framework solution to enable Changi Airport to remotely monitor and control its access road and perimeter lighting and security systems. With an autonomous platform of solar power and wireless LTE communications, remote monitoring and data analytics is provided by solartonic’s solahub™ framework. This is a fully networked and integrated IoT platform for reliable and secure lighting and intelligent CCTV with real-time monitoring and control through the cloud. Data is viewed and systems are controlled via a graphic user interface (GUI) – at a reduced cost of investment and freeing up operational resources for other critical areas
Design Solution: solahub™ framework lighting, security and wireless network
solahub™ is solar powered and free of electrical grid and cable networks, so it can be installed exactly where you need it the most in optimal locations, without having to rely on existing hook up points nor having to dig up expensive finishes to relocate the infrastructure. solahub™ is a low environmental impact solution, since it avoids site trenching and provides a net zero energy solution. In addition, the return on investment is favorable since infrastructure cabling costs are avoided and there no electricity bills.
Changi Airport, through our local operations partners TEE Technology Pvt, Ltd, invited solartonic™ to demonstrate our elegantly designed, smart off-grid energy and communications solutions, due to our reputation for high quality, reliable power, and top performance in extremely hot and wet climates. We designed and manufactured our unique monopole product for the Changi application, that seamlessly integrates solar lighting, CCTV, LTE and Wi-Fi communications with our smart energy control platform to provide remotely controlled dimming profiles and timing, in compliance with the stringent safety and security requirements of the airport.
Our smart lighting solarlume™ and solasmart™ monopoles elegantly integrate our patented slimline omni-directional solar harvesting >20% efficiency solarap™ modules. Our solarap modules uniquely extract solar energy from both direct sunlight and diffuse sky radiation throughout the day, which is optimal for cloudy conditions and shading from adjacent obstacles. Our monopoles also integrate our highest energy density and long life-cycle lithium-ion batteries, which are managed by our smartadapt™ control system to remotely monitor energy cycle performance with small step time increments throughout the day and night, which allows us to also carry out adaptive power management to prolong the life and reliability of the system, as well as avoid blackout failures in the extreme Singapore environment.
As part of solartonic’s value-added engineering, we provided site photometric and shading analysis, customized component integration, shipping logistics, coordination with the installation sub-contractor, and on-site commissioning services. Since our smart lighting monopoles had to be installed along the main busy feeder road into Terminal 2 of the airport, with the need for partial road closures for safety reasons, Changi appreciated that solartonic’s poles arrived on-site completely pre-assembled and were able to be installed and working in 30 minutes per pole, which kept the road disruption and installation costs at a minimum.
